about

For three years, Balakumar and Loya researched Indian mythologies, including the third volume of the Vedas. This led them to select the ones about the creation of the Universe. After having immersed themselves in these legends during several residencies, they composed the six pieces of the album Cosmogony. In particular, the artists were inspired by the myth of the churning of the Ocean of Milk (the Kshirasagara Manthana) with the gods and demons shaking the mountain (Mount Mandara) with the help of the snake Vâsuki to bring out the Amrita (the elixir of immortality). The second track of the album recounts this story: one can feel through the rumblings of the mridangam, the waves of the Ocean of Milk that eventually submerge everything. The album was recorded as a performance, during rehearsals, for our first concert at the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles in 2022. We invited the bansuri flute prodigy Shashank Subramanyam to play on the last three tracks of the album. On all the pieces of Cosmogony, one can hear the rhythms of traditional Indian Ocean music meeting Carnatic music. The acoustic instruments of India, Loya’s esraj, Balakumar’s percussion (mridangam, kanjira, morsing) and Shashank’s flutes blend perfectly with the textures and rumblings of the modular synthesizer, and take us on a journey throughout the album to the sound of the Om.

about

Ohm Normandy, France

Balakumar Paramalingam, like Loya, was born in the Indian Ocean. Both grew up attending
their grandfathers’ temples several times a week and were introduced to Hinduism. The sounds,
smells and intense colors of the Tamil ceremonies deeply influenced all their senses. Both
of them arrived in Europe and were introduced to the instruments they would later master.
